GST/QST for Quebec Small Businesses: Registration, Rates and Deadlines

2026-11-01

Most Quebec businesses collect two sales taxes: the federal goods and services tax (GST) and the Quebec sales tax (QST). Both are generally administered together through Revenu Québec, which makes the paperwork simpler — but only if you register and file on time.

When you must register

You are generally considered a small supplier until your taxable sales exceed $30,000 over four consecutive calendar quarters. Once you cross that line you must register and begin collecting. You can also register voluntarily earlier, which lets you claim input tax credits on business purchases.

How filing periods work

Your filing frequency — monthly, quarterly or annual — depends on your revenue. Returns and payments are generally due one month after the end of the period (annual filers often have more time). Your registration confirms your assigned period.

Three common mistakes

  • Missing input tax credits because receipts weren’t kept or categorized.
  • Mixing taxable, zero-rated and exempt sales in the same account.
  • Paying late because the due date was tied to a calendar nobody owned.

Thresholds and rules change, so always confirm current figures with Revenu Québec. If you’d rather hand it off, see our GST/QST filing service.
